Dr. Laird is a board certified psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner and clinical nurse specialist. Her primary focus is on medication management. She believes in a problem-focused/problem-solving approach. She encourages clients to use behavioral changes and cognitive strategies to deal with problems, issues, and stress along with medication management. Dr. Laird encourages collaboration between the client’s health care providers to promote the best treatment possible. She enjoys working with clients who need help dealing with depression and anxiety. She has worked with many pregnant women dealing with depression and anxiety as well. She enjoys working with students to address any attention deficit issues. She believes in a holistic approach to problem-solving. She encourages clients to include family members in the treatment process if at all possible. She encourages clients to be active participants in cognitive behavioral therapy. She holds a doctorate in education with a specialization in health care education, a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner certificate, and a master’s degree in psychiatric nursing. Dr. Laird has experience in both psychiatric nursing and nursing education. She is also adjunct faculty with Old Dominion University School of Nursing and teaches graduate level nursing education courses.
