Jonathan Bekenstein, MD, PhD, is a board-certified neurologist with Neurological Associates in Richmond, Virginia. A graduate of University of Virginia's Medical Scientist Training Program, Dr. Bekenstein earned both a Doctor of Medicine and Doctor of Philosophy in Neuroscience. Following medical school, he completed his residency training in the Department of Neurology, as well as a fellowship in clinical neurophysiology, at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. Dr. Bekenstein also holds a Bachelor of Arts from Amherst College and spent two summers working for Nobel Prize geneticist Marshall Nirenberg at the National Institutes of Health.

Dr. Bekenstein provides the highest standard of care for his patients, with more than 30 years of clinical and research experience. In addition to general neurology, his specialized interests include the study and treatment of multiple sclerosis, vascular neurology, headaches, and epilepsy. From 2001 to 2021, Dr. Bekenstein was a faculty member in the Department of Neurology at Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine. He also served as the Medical Director for both the Organ Donation Committee and Inpatient Neurology Services at VCU.

In the field of neurology, Dr. Bekenstein is widely recognized and respected for his research related to epilepsy, cellular electrophysiology, and neuropharmacology. Among his many honors, he has been the recipient of Richmond Magazine'sTop Doc Award for several years.
